March For Life in Moscow, Idaho

By Nicole Hindberg on January 22, 2019

January 18 marked the 46th annual March for Life. The March takes place every January on the weekend anniversary of Roe v. Wade. According to the organization’s website, this event “commemorates the over 50 million unborn children that have been lost since the infamous Supreme Court Ruling. The March and Rally are a demonstration in the belief that all life is sacred.”

Locally, the Moscow March for life took place on Saturday, January 19, and was sponsored by Moscow Right To Life. Marchers gathered at Logos school for a brief rally before heading to downtown to Friendship Square. Once they got there, supporters said a prayer and had various speeches. President of Moscow March for Life, Samuel Paul explained the event as “a peaceful march for affirming the sanctity of life from conception”.

During their rally, a small counter-protest grew on the opposite side of Friendship Square. With signs that said, “keep your theology off my biology”. Later in the day chants began where men would say, “Their body their choice” and women would say, “my body, my choice.” These counter-protests aren’t unique to this year and happened at different levels of visibility every year.

According to a March for Life supporter, the march was successful but “there were the occasional obscene gestures, cursing, and screams that were pointed our way but we blessed them and pray for them.” He also said, “We are not marching for rights but only for the rights of others.”

On a national level, supporters gathered in the capital to hear various speakers including Vice President Mike Pence and his wife. His speech was broadcasted live on various platforms.

Vice President Pence said, “We’re the Pences and we are Pro-life. We gather here because we stand for life. We gather here because we stand for compassion. This is a movement defined by compassion and love. Animated by faith and truth that has been winning hearts and minds every day since.”

After his speech, President Trump addressed the supporters in a prerecorded video. He began by saying “This is a movement found in love and the nobility and dignity found in life.” President Trump then discussed his various efforts and legislation that protects the religious rights of doctors for not performing abortions and religious-based adoptions.

President Trump said “I am supporting the U.S. Senate’s effort to make permanent the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits taxpayer funding for abortion in spending bills. Today I signed a letter to Congress to make clear that if they send any legislation to my desk that weakens the protection of human life, I will issue a veto. And we have the support to uphold those vetoes.”

The March is set to happen again next year.
